Location: San Diego, CA
Type: Market

A reliable source for organic and natural foods can be a rare commodity, but since 1972, San Diego residents have been able to count on OB People’s. Located in the costal community of Ocean Beach, this co-op market has grown into a 6,000 sq. ft. haven for organic, fair trade, vegetarian, and natural foods and products that is only continuing to grow.

When you first walk in, you are greeted by a first level that offers a hearty and impressive array of organic and natural produce, nuts, beverages, spices, coffee beans, and other snacks and foods. The main shopping floor also features household items, frozen and pre-packaged foods, and a raw foods and snacks section that puts other competing markets to shame. (I’m looking at you Whole Foods). When you visit, be sure to check out the impressive selection of organic and fair trade coffee beans and chocolates, 6-packs of organic beers, and pre-packaged raw, vegan, and vegetarian foods from local companies like San Diego’s Peace Pies.

The beauty of OB People’s, however, doesn’t just end with its market. Climb the stairs to the 2nd floor and you arrive at the renowned and always bustling vegetarian deli. For breakfast, lunch, and dinner, this deli is stocked with a rotating selection of prepared foods made fresh on-site using organic ingredients. There is always something delicious and healthy to order, but get in the often-crowded line and place your order quick because they do sell out of popular items.

SOFT Living™ Favorites: OB People’s Deli
Still hungry after your main course? Want a little more control over your salad options? Just to the left of the deli counter is an organic salad bar that is coupled with a selection of 2 daily organic and vegetarian soups.
Oh, and don’t forget to check out the vegan bakery, located just to the right of the deli counter. There is a daily selection of cookies and muffins, but by the end of the day, expect them to be a bit depleted.

Rounding out the 2nd floor at OB People’s is a seating area where customers can enjoy deli items on site. There are many more great offerings at OB People’s, so our recommendation is to stop by if you live in or are visiting San Diego and find your favorites.
One final tip: Being a co-op, OB People’s offers a refundable ownership investment of $15 per year. Everyone is always allowed to shop, but non-members will be charged a 10% surcharge on all items. So if you plan on frequenting the market, the investment is well worth it.
